KDE-L10N-kn Translator Guidelines

  1. Maximum Kannada: Instead of borrowing English words and using them as they are in the translations, try to maximize the Kannada usage.
For ex: Instead of writing "Shell Script" as "ಶೆಲ್ ಸ್ಕ್ರಿಪ್ಟ್" in the translations, try to find an equivalent Kannada word and use it (something like ವಿಧಿಗುಚ್ಛ would really be a nice word to use)

  2. Consistency: all the KDE translations should have a consistency among themselves which in turn calls for a common understanding among the translators for each translations.
For ex: All the occurrences of the word "Settings" in any PO file must be translated to the same Kannada word (may be "ಸಿದ್ಧತೆಗಳು" or "ಸಂಯೋಜನೆಗಳು" - anything but, the same word everywhere!) by all the translators.

  3. Precision: The translations must convey exactly the same meaning which their English counterparts do in the original string.

  4. Understandability / Usability: The translations must be easily understandable and usable by the large community of users with varying language and computing skills.
For ex: If our community has accepted a word like "ಸೀಡೀ" and using it everywhere, let's not try to disturb them by forcing upon them a word like "ಅಡಕ ಮುದ್ರಿಕೆ" or "ಅಡಕ ತಟ್ಟೆ". People must feel that they are comfortable with what they are using.
